"Paint the right picture"

If you are currently marketing in a foreign country you already appreciate the importance of correct market research into the customs and tastes of that country and no doubt you understand that a simple translation of English is not sufficient. Terms that one would consider international, really are not.

How may times have you been amused at the supposed English translation of menus, instruction leaflets, etc.?
Amusing people is an excellent marketing tool, but not when it is at your own expense.
Many a product has fallen flat simply because the product name itself is not changed for the vending country, example :
Who wants to drive around in a car called a "Whale"?

We use idioms and "politically correct" terms every day, a very simple example is "It's raining cats and dogs" in French this is approximately "It's raining or falling ropes" as you see the idiom itself will not translate directly. (NB. French sports commentators were recently enchanted by this English idiom for what they see as a very English phenomenon.)

The French language is incorporating many buzz words and subsequently conjugating them as verbs following French grammar rules or in the case of one word for instance creating their own Franglais - the word in English is "overbooking", the French is "la surréservation", but they have developed "le surbooking". Well we do it as well - after all a "chaise longue" is not a "chaise longue" at all, it is a "méridienne" (a chaise longue is really a deck chair or at the most an outside lounger!)

Please note: With the proliferation of Server Side, Flash and Active Content (and its regrettable possibilities of transferring virus, trojan, worm codes even to well protected PCs) we no longer download web sites for translation. We now need the actual pages requiring translation preferably in Word or text format.
